I agree with former President Jimmy Carter rather than Senator George Mitchell on the importance of talks with Hamas - the EU, and US, Bush and Blair and Brown and Israel can't just ignore people who have won elections because they don't like the result. What is self-evident though is that George Mitchell is a statesman like Mikhail Gorbachev and Jimmy Carter in a way that after some early promise Tony Blair failed to be.
