Advice on removing myincredibar search, IB updater, ‘Web Assistant’, ‘SweetPacks Chrome Extension 1.4.0.4’ and related files.

I wasted many hours over two days trying to remove this programme which had hijacked my new window tab in Google Chrome, running on Windows 7. What I couldn't find all in one place was a foolproof way to remove this intrusive infestation, although plenty of advice from public spirited people on blogs and forums helped remove features of it.

I had to search on programmes in control panel as the associated files were not obvious. Going into the settings on Chrome, extensions, and disabling everything that you didn't put there and deleting ones you don't want also needed.

This answer by ken545 on the forum related to Spybot solved it for me.

Running each of these removed a lot of unwanted content. Although I have still not been able to delete the unwanted Web Assistant folder from Program Files.

Among other places I found helpful advice on deletemalware.blogspot.com. This post included step by step instructions for removing MyStart by IncrediBar search engine in from Windows 7, and from Google Chrome, Firefox .

But the programme seemed to have become more resistant since it was written on 18 July 2012, so I had to take the steps listed above on Spybot, afterwards as well.

I hope this is helpful to some. If you find a 'one stop shop' for removal let me know directly and I will post that up.
